Wildlife Watcher

The Southern Wildlife Watcher (University of South Carolina Press, 2020) by Rob Simbeck includes a list of 36 animals by the air, land, or water location in which they live. The author describes his book as “a love story” about animals and a record of his appreciation “for the creatures around us – large and small, drab and flashy.”

These short articles disclose little known facts about birds, house flies, spiders, small mammals, snakes, worms, fish, frogs, turtles, manatees, crustaceans, and sharks. That a copperhead, my greatest gardening fear, can live to be twenty years old is an example of the level of the essay’s details.
